تأهل نيوكاسل يونايتد الإنجليزي لدور الـ16 من دوري أبطال أوروبا بعد فوزه على ضيفه كارباغ أغدام الاذربيجاني بنتيجة 3-2 في اللقاء الذي جمع بينهما على ملعب جيمس بارك ضمن لقاءات جولة الإياب للملحق المؤهل لدور الـ16 من المسابقة، وتمكن نيوكاسل من الفوز ذهاباً وإياباً وبمجموع اللقاءين 9-3.
شهد اللقاء بداية قوية لأصحاب الأرض والجمهور وتمكن من إحراز هدفين في الدقائق الأولى من عمر اللقاء، إذ أحرز ساندرو تونالي الهدف الأول لنيوكاسل في الدقيقة الرابعة، ثم أحرز زميله جويلاينتون الهدف الثاني في الدقيقة السادسة، وفي الشوط الثاني تمكن كارباغ أغدام من تقليص النتيجة عن طريق كاميلو دوران (د:50)، ولكن سفين بوتمان تمكن من إحراز الهدف الثالث لنيوكاسل (د:52)، وبعد خمس دقائق تحصل الفريق الأذربيجاني على ركلة جزاء سددها ماركو يانكوفيتش وتصدى لها الحارس أرون رامسديل لكنها وصلت للاعب الفين سيفيركلييف الذي سددها في المرمى هدفاً ثانياً (د:57)، لينتهي اللقاء بفوز نيوكاسل يونايتد بثلاثة أهداف لهدفين، ليتأهل بذلك نيوكاسل لدور الـ16 بمجموع اللقاءين 9-3، فيما غادر كارباغ أغدام منافسات البطولة.
